PostHeaderIcon Historic Places – Christ’s Church St. Simons Island

The development of Georgia has always had churches at the center.  Christ Church is a historic church near Fort Frederica on St. Simons Island.  One of the oldest churches in Georgia, Christ Church was founded in 1808 following the Revolutionary war.  The original building was constructed in 1820 but was badly damaged during the Civil war.  In 1884 the church was rebuilt.

Today services are still held in the gothic style building.  Visitors are welcome to attend services and the church building is open to the public from 2-5 daily for tours.  The grounds include a cemetery with the oldest grave dating back to 1803.

PostHeaderIcon Fort Frederica

Georgia has a number of historic sites one of which is Fort Frederica National Monument located on St. Simons Island and cared for by the National Park Service.  The fort is named after Frederick, Prince of Wales and is located on the bend of the Frederica River which gave it a good defensive position.  The Fort was inhabited by 800-100 people from 1736 – 1758.  Fort Frederica was the location of the Bloody Marsh, the 1742 battle in which General Oglethorpe’s soldiers defeated the Spanish forces.  There is a cemetery located on the Fort’s grounds with an unknown number of people buried there.

A visit to the historic location will allow you a peek back in time.  There are park ranger led tours and living history programs throughout the year.  The park also features exhibits and an orientation film.  For more information call 912-638-3639.

PostHeaderIcon Another Georgia Business In Trouble

I just learned about another Georgia business falling into money troubles and this one could impact some Georgia vacationers travel plans.  Apparently the Sea Island Co., owners of Sea Island The Cloister & The Lodge on St. Simons Island, is in debt.  The article from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says:

The company’s downward spiral is a stunning tale of over-borrowing and over-expansion that collided with the worst recession since World War II, a downturn that has pummeled the luxury resort market across the nation.

However, if you do have vacation plans at Sea Island the article says the resort is still open.  To read the entire article click here.
